It all started back in 1976, when two brothers with an extensive background in the restaurant trade, along with a third partner decided to open a one-of-a kind Montreal Restaurant & Delicatessen. The idea, to serve hand-cut Montreal style smoked meat on freshly baked rye bread along with the now, award wining homemade strawberry cheesecake. Taking a chance, they selected a basement location which required extensive work to create a seating capacity for 150. Nestled where the once former infamous Capitol Theatre (c.1921-1973) stood, the original location, 888 opened its doors with a welcoming design in mind, from handcrafted Tiffany lights suspended in the backdrop of the warmth and richness of the mahogany wood.
Not wanting to limit the type of clientele they served, they created a menu for almost everyone, even the most finicky eaters! The menu was endless, serving everything from big breakfast flare such as omelettes to pancakes, lunch specials which included salads and pizza and multi-course dinner meal deals such as triple-A Angus steaks accompanied with soup, salad, coffee and dessert. The criteria, simple: serve great food at a great price. The tradition continues on even today!
Before they knew, people were travelling from around the world to enjoy their tasty creations and experience the “philoxenia”, a word that encapsulates the legacy of Greek hospitality, a value they brought over from their homeland.
A few years later and with the ongoing support from loyal customers, the success of the business flourished; forcing the partners to open a second location at Place Dupuis, in Montreal, followed by a third location steps away from the original 888 location.
As Montreal has seen various changes through the years, so has Reuben’s Restaurant & Delicatessen, in 2002 all partners decided to go their separate ways. The 888 location remained in the hands of one brother, Mr. Terry who continued to strive to provide the most superior quality food in restaurant and delicatessen environment. His philosophy, “quality is our signature.”
At the present moment, the restaurant still remains in the family hands. It is operated by his daughter and son-in-law, who both have diverse and extensive backgrounds in the hospitality and foodservice industry. However, they both agree: “the greatest learning experience was not gathered from reading the books or taking the courses, instead it was working alongside Mr. Terry, and watching him do what he enjoyed the most, making every customer happy.” Reuben’s Restaurant and Delicatessen, we await you with our friendly staff and great food!
Since 1976, quality was and is our tradition!
